Give submissions a reference number

A human-readable reference your team and customers can quote.

When to use this. Your team needs to quote a reference when discussing a submission with a customer.

What you’ll need. A form that is collecting responses.

  1. Open the reference settings

In the form builder settings rail, choose Form submission reference.

  2. Set a prefix and suffix

A prefix identifies the form at a glance, for example INV- or SUP-. A suffix is optional and useful for a year or a site code.

  3. Choose the starting number

Set the number the first reference uses. If you are migrating from another system, start above your existing highest number so references never collide.

  4. Set the minimum digits

Minimum digits pads the number with leading zeros, so 7 becomes 0007. Pick a width you will not outgrow — it keeps references the same length, which matters when people sort them as text.

  5. Check a real submission

Submit the form once and confirm the reference reads as you intended. Include it in your auto-response so the customer can quote it back to you.

How to know it worked

Each new submission carries a sequential reference in your own format.
